What to write in a get well or sympathy card
When someone is ill or grieving, it’s hard to know what to say. Short and kind is enough. Here are messages that help.
Get well soon
- Thinking of you and sending lots of love.
- Take all the time you need. We’ve got things covered.
- The team isn’t the same without you. Get well soon!
- When you’re feeling better, coffee is on me.
- Sending you strength and a lot of bad jokes.
- Rest up. We’re all rooting for you.
- Something to make you smile: the office plant is still alive.
- No need to reply. Just know we’re thinking of you.
Sympathy
- I’m so sorry. I’m thinking of you and your family.
- There are no words. Just know we’re here for you.
- I’ll always remember how kind they were.
- Sending love to you and everyone who misses them.
- No need to reply. We’re all thinking of you.
- If you need anything at all, even just a walk, I’m here.
- They made everyone around them feel welcome. I’ll never forget that.
- Holding you in my thoughts.
A shared memory
- I remember how they always…
- My favourite memory of them is…
- They once told me something I’ve never forgotten:
- I’ll always think of them when…
Tips
- Keep it short and warm. You don’t need to fix anything.
- Avoid “I know how you feel” and “everything happens for a reason”.
- A specific memory of the person who died is often the most comforting thing.
- Say they don’t need to reply.
